in guild wars pvp, all players start on a level playing field (lvl 20, 200 attribs, perf weapons avaiable for pvp chars) and there is no one l33t build that p00nz0rz eveything. therefore ultimately who wins or loses is down to skill and experience only.

Try original Guild Wars first, you'll soon realise whether you like it or not.
NB: In PvP arenas, people utilise skills from both chapters, regardless of whether you own it or not. That may put you at a slight disadvantage. But it should only be minor.
GW:F will only get cheaper.

Wow gets very boring quickly in my honest opinion, something that hasn't happened to me in Guildwars for nearly 12 months now.
I've had games like Lineage 2 and ragnorak online, i got to level 20 and it felt like all i done after that was level gain. Rather boring... And the rate at which i could buy weapons was also getting stupidly fast.
So, it really depends on what type of gamer you are. Casual players in guildwars might not be the richest, nor the best looking - yet they can still be good (mainly due to the level cap).

1-Yes, it is possible with your alliance via scrimmage battles. I find it fun to do sometimes when you just want to fool around.
2- Very much so. A skilled player you will always be obvious over everyone else. The difference between a skilled interruption ranger and an average one, for example, is a massive gap. The same goes with any warrior or monk.
3a- I don't know what "talents" are exactly, but the most customizable thing I can think of is your build.
3b-In lower end play, yes. There are several people in PvE that just want you to run the same builds, or "Tank, Healer, Nuker." In low end PvP there are many cookie cutter builds, like "touch rangers" which all pretty much run the same skill bars and aren't exactly easy to counter.
In higher end PvP there are some cookie cutters, like Ranger Spike and Blood Spike, but they all run several variants of those builds.
4-In Guild Wars you pretty much have to use your entire skill bar. There are no miracle skills, although some people might think there are (those people are usually very unskilled). With Factions there are alot more build combinations you can do now, too. Each class now has about 125 skills to choose from.
5-The closest thing I've played to WoW pvp is DOTA in Warcraft III. I personally hate Dota I'de say the two don't compare from waht I've seen.

actually unlock all skills in the game take very few time. If you put a little more effort in it, you can have unclocked every spell for every classes in about 2weeks [if you know game well in one week]. All you have to do is take quests that rewards you with new spells. So you create 3 characters each with different secondary and primary profession [for example monk/mesmer, necromancer/elementalist, ranger/warrior] and complete the game with quests and capping skills. After this you complete, you can easily start using your OWN characters using in PvP and not have to creat unique only-pvp characters on lvl20 with all skills you have unlocked before and so.
IMO, you should really try PvE first, so you can understand whole system, after the first half of campaign, game starts you preparing for PvPing...

I would personally jsut buy the original game first, just to get a feel if you like GWs at all. But if you will have to buy GW:F if you really want to get into PvP. Becasue their are a lot of new skills, classes, and items that you may need. Not because they are better, but because they add more variety and certain builds might require them. But until you get into that lvl of PvP the original game will be fine.

GW is really the best pvp game around, really. I really hate the grind in WoW to get a decent pvp char.

I think its important to make the distinction that GW is IMO the best TEAM BASED PVP game around. Lots of people (the majority?) dont like team based games and prefer 1v1. For them I imagine GW sucks big time. If you have seven great players on your team, and one weak player, you could easily lose. Lots of people dont like that
GW is about 128 skills being brought onto the battlefield, acting with and against each other in a delicate balance, a balance ultimately tipped by the skill of one side or the other.

On Factions vs Prophecies, I like faction and feel it is a better introduction to the game from a pvp standpoint. Yes it is a bit small and feels crowded, but levelling is nicer, and the missions and mobs are more interesting. I really like the new PvP content and feel that you'd really want prophecies for the skills and high level pve content.

It's entirely up to you really which one you buy and play first. It won't make any difference.

It is worth noting that if you ever want to be competitive in PvP, you need BOTH Factions and Prophecies. Some skills are included only in one of the two chapters, so in order to have the full set available you do really need both.

Both is definitely recommended... but I feel if you only want one (limited cash or whatever), you can put together a perfectly good team with just prophecies.

Factions' learning curve is much, much steeper than Prophecies', so unless you want to hit the wall early in Factions' PvE, you may want to start with Prophecies.
But Factions is a much quicker game to get through, and skill acquisition is much faster. So it's your choice - an easier learning curve versus faster skill acquisition.
I wouldn't suggest that you get both games at first. Buy a second chapter when you're ready for more.

But it seems like it would still be possible to be competitive with only one of them. You'd just get less flexibility in terms of what competitive builds you can play.
Or is it that there are no really competitive builds anymore that don't include at least one non-core skill from each campaign? That seems unlikely, but I wouldn't really know.

I played Lineage 2 which is similiar to WoW in terms of open PvP and all I can say is it sucks.
You spend hours to make a character that can beat any other character just to get ganked by a whole group. It's all about who can bring more people into the fight, very boring.
You get fun moments when you come out on top, but after all it's just dull "get as many people as you can".
In GW it's always balanced and if you lose you can easily accept that the enemy team was just better.

1-I heard that to gain access to some skills you need to do PvE. Since I'm not really interested into PvE (well not in WoW at least, might be a bit more interesting in GW), would that be an important weakness to my character?
|
well it is possible to unlock any skill through PvP, it just goes faster with PvE. in fact the only advantage to PvPing with RP characters is that you look better and you can swap armor.

2-Since I don't know anybody in GW, what's the best way to get into a good PvP guild?
|
well firstly, get good. then, do hero's ascent PuG's and get to know some people. then, get into their guilds.
alternativley, you could just be a guild *wtf this forum has wierd censoring*, hopping from guild to guild untill you find a good one, but thats no way to get friends now is it? :P
i have played WoW and GW. first i played GW and then switched to WoW. about 6 months later i came back to GW. its just so much better, and i am a pvp player.
one difference is that you have to rely on yourself more. no consumable items that let you pwn someone. no UI mods that let people know how long you are going to have that spell on you. no uber leet gear.
the best part of GW is that it lets you innovate.
